FreeGIS CD 1.2.4

Homepage of the FreeGIS Project

The FreeGIS CD has the intention

to offer alternatives for proprietary GIS applications and geo-data and to promote the free alternatives making them known to a broad public. This includes GIS working environments, several GIS applications, free geo-data, tools for GIS application development and also GIS education. Neither private nor commercial use of the programs/data is limited. The CD can be further copied and distributed in any number.

Up to the release of the FreeGIS CD there was no serious attempt to make free GIS software to a competable product. This step needs lots of work on details and has yet not been completeted for any of the present programs. Version 1 of the CD is to be seen as a first step in this direction. There is no minor performance in free products, usually the weaknesses are in the less developed and styled user interfaces.

The FreeGIS CD is arrangened with the intention to provide quick access to any documentation. This makes it easy for potential users to find out the functionalities of the programs. Furthermore, where possible, short examples are provided for quick starts. Those examples should be executed in a shell by applying the "copy and paste" method.

If you have any question regarding the CD, problems with the installation or any comments, please send them to freegis-cd@intevation.de. We are happy to help you.
