FreeGIS Project: next steps

These items are the next to work on (comments on their ranking and further topics are welcome!):

1. Add browse category 'toolkit/library'
   

2. Extend search to the mailing list archive
   

3. Simplify user help on changes, new entries
   Allow simple ways to enter update infos on existing or new entries for any user. These data will get into a review system where the FreeGIS team may approve, change or reject so that FreeGIS stays moderated.

4. Cross references among entries
   Related entries reference each other so that information likely to be important is easier to find.

5. Extend database by screenshots for entries
   

6. Add opportunity to download FreeGIS database
   A sensible format must be choosen for this (xml?). The idea is to let others build applications for use of the FreeGIS data.

7. Extend search to entry changelogs
   

8. FreeGIS Team: explain who it is and what they do
   This should be part of the About FreeGIS page.

9. Opportunity to select time period for recent changes
   Make it possible to select certain time periods for the page Recent changes, e.g.: "last week", "last month", "last 2 month"

10. Make preparations to allow FreeGIS to offer further languages
    The current FreeGIS team speaks only a limited number of languages good enough to present translate all of FreeGIS adequately. Furthermore, it is beyond capacity to do the translation work for many languages.

    Thus, the FreeGIS portal must be enabled to let trusted people manage the translation on their own. Since FreeGIS is based on Zope, this should not reveal major technical problems. The managment of coordination is more challenging and should be aided by apropriate mechanisms.

13. New graphical design of the FreeGIS site
    Development of an alternative face for the FreeGIS web site carefully using some graphical elements. This would necessitate the development of a FreeGIS logo. The text version will still be available and maintained.
